War of the W-W-WHAAAAAT???

Sad to say that I contributed to War of the World $100 million weekend. Worldwide it looks like the thing made over $200 million. My views on the film are that it's good and bad at the same time. In the theater, I was wrapped up in the movie, which is as good (on all technical levels), as you could imagine. Even when Spielberg takes a dump, he knows how to make sure you are interested. So, like I said, most of my problems with this movie only came to mind after I had gotten over the rush of the alien invasion.

Ultimately, I think the bad outweighs the good in this movie and, for all its good points, I can't recommend it. There are a lot of reasons for this and I'd be willing to discuss them in further length with you if you had seen the movie. Instead you came to a blog. GOING TO A BLOG IS NOT THE SAME THING AS SEEING A MOVIE.

The ending of this movie was one of the worst I can remember seeing. I threw up. I threw up repeatedly. There are a lot of plot holes in this story. This movie is worse, yes WORSE than it's predecesors (eg Independence Day). I liked it better, but it is WORSE.

I realize this quasi-review is full of contradictions, but how else can you talk about a movie that looks like every other movie, has no heart or soul and completely cops out at the ending, but was directed by the foremost living director working today? Spielberg is a great director, few would argue that. But it's insulting for him to shove this crap down our throats on 4th of July weekend.

It's hard to end a post where you rip on one of your childhood idols. In an open communication to Spielberg, who I think checks my site pretty regularly, I would like to beg him to make movies he cares about or not make movies at all. There are too many talented, passionate directors who could have made War of the Worlds something SPECIAL. I enjoyed this movie, but I hate everything behind it. Since there is nothing behind this movie except sap, hot air and various cool looking aliens. This movie was made to be released to DVD. Good day, Mr. Spielberg. Can't wait for what I'm sure will be an unbiased look at the Israel/Palestine conflict.

Long live Peter Jackson.
